Candles and my fireplace are two of the primary tools getting me through this bleak midwinter. One or the other (sometimes both) are lit in my home on any given day. And while I can’t keep the fireplace going forever, I have found a way to extend the life of my candles.
As the candles burn down, I pour the melted wax into smaller jars (prepped with a candlewick, attached with a dot of hot glue), making mini candles (pictured above). I have to say, the extra mini-ness of the second candle from the right (above) delights me in so many ways! I think the jar was a jelly sample and I’ve had that jar for years, knowing someday I’d find a use for it.
Candlewicks are easy to get online and most of the jars I use are Yoplait’s Oui yogurt containers. Huge shout out to Yoplait for putting their product into something useful that can later become beautiful, too. William Morris and I approve.
Like my loyalty to the Classico brand spaghetti sauce, because it comes in those awesome Atlas Mason jars, I’m willing to pay a bit more for the Oui yogurt, because the little glass jars can be used in so many ways. There are even little lids (available online) made to fit these containers, if I ever need them.
That’s it. Really. There’s no great metaphor coming out of this post. Just sharing another example of what I’m doing to make something of it and a glimpse of something that brings me joy.
Great idea Leah!
