That’s How You Know You’re Alive

I’m binge-watching Derek on Netflix. I could write an entire post on what a lovely, welcome surprise this series is, compared to what I assumed it would be, based on an out-of-context clip. But I have to resist chasing that squirrel and focus on the reason I hit pause and then rewind so I could share this excerpt (season 1, episode 7) word-for-word:

“From the moment you’re born, from the moment your head pops out, someone gives you a slap to make you cry, because that’s how they know you’re alive. You cry. And that’s it, for the next 70 or 80 years, that’s what life is, someone giving you a slap, and then a load of crying. That’s life.”

I’m here to tell you, I am very much alive.
