I Can Buy Myself Flowers

I’ve been more blue than usual lately, so I’ve been extra intentional about being creative. Even if it’s just prepping for a project or organizing supplies, my hands have been busy all week. I can’t say that tactic changes how I feel, but it distracts me and makes the time pass more quickly (always a gift). The greatest challenge (which I’ve written about before) is what to do with what I make. I love feeling useful. Nothing pleases me more than to make something that’s needed (a gift, a donation, a sample of something I’m teaching). Just crafting for crafting’s sake can feel pointless (not to mention adding clutter I don’t need).

But, I needed a project this weekend, so I scrolled through Pinterest and found these sweet little button bouquets. That gave me something else to hunt for on my walkabout through Peddler’s Mall (these shakers were just $1/each) and a chance to use more fabric hexies and dig through my collection of buttons. I think what drew me most to this project is the brilliance of using salt and pepper shakers, with their built-in flower frogs! It’s as if those perfectly spaced holes were made for tiny stems.

In the end, these were nothing more than a way to pass the time, but I’ve decided to think of them as a gift to myself; flowers for Valentine’s Day.

  1. Dear Leah,
I made dozens of those many years ago when we still lived in IL, and sold them at the annual craft market along with my books. I had to much fun making them. Yours are quite lovely! And good for you for doing something to bring you joy. You brought the rest of us joy as well.
