Two Gifts in One

20140124_191337For as long as I can remember, my favorite scripture has always been, “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be opened” (Matthew 7:7). At the same time, for as long as I can remember, it never ceases to amaze me when any one of those things happens. I consider myself a glass-is-half-full person, but, deep down, I think I set my sights low(er) to avoid disappointment. A little twisted, but it works for me.

Yesterday, I thoroughly enjoyed finding another package of used greeting cards in my mailbox, sent to me by a friend who remembered my request and saw how happy the first package of cards made me. She’d given me the heads-up they were coming, but people get busy and life has a way of interrupting even the best of intentions. So, I denied myself the joy of anticipation, in exchange for the thrill of the surprise.

At least I thought the package was the surprise, until I opened it and found her note: “Thanks for recycling, Leah! You’re awesome!” There is no human being I know who doesn’t need the occasional post-it note reminding her that someone, somewhere thinks she’s awesome.

So, what did you ask for, receive, or get surprised by today?

P.S. No, there’s no such thing as “too many greeting cards” – I welcome them all! I even have this fantasy that if I receive enough, I could start offering Making Something of It retreats or workshops, and spend a day or a weekend with groups of folks who want to gather and make something of it together.
