Possibility City

possibility cityWant to know what’s a huge barrier when searching for a job? Not knowing what position title to pop into the search engine on a job seeker website. I can feel the blinking cursor just begging me to type something – anything – so the site can work its magic, but I’m stumped.

I don’t do any better when faced with a human being, asking me, “What kind of work are you looking for?” It’s just not easy to explain (well, unless you have half an hour or you’re willing to skim most of my blog posts up to this point), which makes finding the-job-that-will-not-be-named even more difficult.

Not long ago, I heard the title Professional Muse, which I assume is something like a Life Coach, but not exactly (or else they probably would’ve used the title Life Coach). So far, that’s the best description I have for what I want/hope to do. I want to inspire, stir, awaken, encourage, and motivate other people. I want to help others see possibilities they hadn’t considered and connect them with people and resources they didn’t know were available … until they met me.

Hearing me say “professional muse,” a friend shared this quote, from Benjamin Zander, former conductor of the Boston Philharmonic: “A conductor depends, for his power, on his ability to make other people powerful.”

Exactly! I want what I do to make others powerful, in the best sense of that word.

In 2009, Greater Louisville re-branded itself as Possibility City – “a place where blue-sky thinking meets grassroots can-do. It’s a city without limits. Anything’s possible here in Louisville. Especially you.”

Sounds like I’m in the right place for whatever work it is I’m seeking. Now, if only I knew what I was seeking.
